Going Back to School with Braces

The transition from summer back to school can be a tough one for some students (and parents!) – and this can be especially true if your child started their orthodontic treatment over the summer. This could be their first time showing off their new accessory, and they may be feeling a little insecure. Here’s what you need to know about sending your child back to school with braces:

  1. Help your child understand that he or she is not alone, and that their new braces are a temporary part of their beautiful smile. Kids often feel like no one understands what they’re going through, and having a conversation with your child to alleviate any fears and insecurities and just let them know you’re there can go a long way in giving them that extra boost of confidence. Plus, if your child looks around they’re likely to see they’re not alone – many of their classmates are probably on a similar path to achieving the straight smile they want.

  1. You should prepare a “care kit” for your child, especially for teens that can and will take the extra steps to care for their smiles. These kits can include a toothbrush and toothpaste (hopefully they can make it to the restroom after lunch for a quick cleaning session), dental floss or floss picks, mouthwash, extra rubber bands, and some wax for any wires causing sore spots. Giving your child the tools they need to care for their braces while they’re away from you will let them know you’re thinking of them and help them to feel prepared for the inevitable food-stuck-in-braces situation!

  1. Don’t forget the water! Your child’s water bottle will help keep their braces clear of food remnants and of course, it’s always a great idea to stay hydrated. Water is a superior choice to juice or soda, especially while wearing braces. Sodas and juices tend to stain teeth, and with brackets, the stains will be even more prominent. Water is ideal.

  1. Send easy foods in your child’s lunch. As you and your child both adjust to their new braces, you’ll see which foods they struggle with keeping out of their braces, such as very hard, gummy, or sticky foods. Needless to say, these foods should be avoided while your child is in school. Stick with easy to chew foods and softer “sweet” choices, such as yogurt or pouches for younger students. And be sure to give your child plenty of water to wash it all down!
